Encouraging New Sheep Producers

While US consumers are buying lamb, the domestic flock is dwindling and more product is coming from imports, usually with a significant price advantage. The US needs to consistently produce quality lamb in the quantities needed year-round.

Howard Wyman Leadership School

ALB helps sponsor the National Lamb Feeders Association (NLFA) Howard Wyman Leadership School. This annual event is named for NLFA leader Howard Wyman (deceased) and emphasizes the feeding, marketing, harvesting and merchandising of American Lamb.

The 5-day program is designed to highlight a cross-section of the sheep industry, especially for up-and-coming industry leaders. Emphasis is placed on hands-on learning, with locations selected that allow for tours of lamb farms/ranches, feedlots, processing facilities and marketing outlets.

A yearly application process selects the participants. Attendees must be at least 20 years of age. A registration fee is required. More information and applications are available on the NLFA website.

LambEx

LambEx, held in Australia, attracts more than 1,000 attendees from around the world. It showcases the latest advancements in the industry and provides the rare opportunity to draw together sheep producers and representatives from the entire sheep production supply chain. Because of the opportunities it offers US lamb producers to learn from the competition and learn cutting edge information, ALB has a program to help with expenses.
